Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a lifelong chronic disease that occurs as a result of the pancreas not producing enough insulin or the body not being able to use the insulin it produces effectively. In normal metabolism, foods are broken down in our intestines to turn into glucose, the body's main fuel. This glucose then passes from the intestines into the blood and the sugar level in the blood begins to rise. In healthy individuals, glucose entering the blood is transported into the cells with the help of the insulin hormone secreted from the pancreas. If the insulin hormone is not in our body or its effect is impaired, glucose cannot be transported into the cell, glucose increases in the blood, and blood sugar elevation, which we call eye, heart and kidney disease, develops. If this high blood sugar continues continuously, it will cause serious disorders in our organs (nerves, etc.) over time.
