SHINGLES
SHINGLES DISEASE (HERPES ZOSTER)
It is an infection caused by the varicella zoster virus and progresses through vesicles (small water-filled sacs). The virus, which becomes latent in the nerve roots after chickenpox infection, is activated by some factors and causes shingles. Shingles can easily occur in the course of any disease in which the immune system is weakened (such as flu, urinary tract infection, cancer) and under intense stress. Although it is more common over the age of 50, it can be seen at any age. The virus reaches the skin surface locally from nerve cells along a nerve track, where it manifests itself with vesicular rashes. It usually appears on one half of the body (if the rash is on the right side of the body, it does not move to the left). However, it can sometimes be common. The rash is most common on one half of the body. Shingles are very rare in the areas below the knees and elbows.
